FAQ’s

What is Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is a complementary, hands-on therapy which looks at the entire body, focusing on treating pain, structural dysfunction and helping in injury rehabilitation.

It is suitable for a many problems affecting muscles, bones, and tendons and is able to solve a large number of health issues. It can also repair damaged areas of the body and promote the body’s own healing process.

Depending on the injury, the pressure of this healing treatment can be strong with a deep intensity or gentle and soft. Once the therapist has found the damaged areas of the body or the cause of the pain, the massage will focus around treating those muscles that are causing the pain.

Targeting for Traditional Chinese Medicine comprehensive therapy.

Aims & Scope

TCMT is aimed at diseases in TCM internal medicine, which has a wide range of treatments. Our TCM practitioners use TCM’s theory of “Treatment based on syndrome differentiation” to find the cause of your pain.  Basically, it is based on the pathogenesis, syndrome, mechanism of various diseases, changes in the deficiency, excess of Qi and blood in the viscera diagnosis, clinical symptoms, signs, etc.

Besides, TCM internal medicine therapy covers a lot of common diseases, for instance, colds, headaches, dizziness, cough, runny nose, insomnia, loss of appetite, gastrointestinal discomfort, constipation, palpitations, body conditioning, etc.  Internal medicine also includes adjusting the functions of the viscera organs, targeting the heart, diseases caused by liver, spleen, lung, kidney, gallbladder, small intestine, stomach, large intestine, bladder, or triple warmer.

According to the patient’s clinical symptoms and signs, TCM practitioners will decide on utilising different treatment methods to help to move the client’s blocked energy and pool the blood to relieve tension or pain.  Treatment options include acupuncture, moxibustion, auricular therapy or other treatments such as dry needling or scraping.

What does Acupuncture do?

Acupuncture is the practice of regulating health by applying needles to the body. It is based on ancient Chinese medical theory and is recognised by the Australian Government as an allied health service.

Despite being the most well-known, acupuncture is just one part of traditional Chinese Medicine. Other components include moxibustion, cupping, gua sha, tui na and herbal medicine.

As a primary health service of its time acupuncture techniques were developed for treating a huge range of illness. Today with the help of modern science we can see the effects acupuncture has on systems throughout the body.

When treating illness, it is the role of acupuncture to function like a traffic controller after a road accident. Helping to restore the free flow of qi and blood through the meridians and resolve pain. This in turn further promotes healing.

Is Acupuncture painful?

The Acupuncture experience will vary from person to person, and treatment to treatment. Most people would not characterise a treatment as painful. Needles used for a treatment are smaller than those used for injections or blood tests. Acupuncture needles therefore create less tissue damage and are significantly less painful.

Will I feel anything?

After insertion different sensations may be generated by precise manipulations of the needle. They may vary in nature and radiate to other parts of the body. A dull sensation is common and should be taken as a sign the treatment is going well. This dull sensation is commonly referred to as ʻde-qiʼ.

Is Acupuncture safe?

In the hands of an experienced practitioner Acupuncture is extremely safe. As the needles can be quickly removed from the body if too uncomfortable and no chemicals are used.

The needles are approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration and are single use sterile needles. All equipment used in our clinic meets or exceeds Australian safety standards to ensure the safest acupuncture treatments possible.

What conditions can Acupuncture work for?

A huge amount of research regarding the efficacy of Acupuncture and Moxibustion is currently available.

Clinically we have seen countless patients improve under our care with a wide range of disease. If you would like specific information regarding your individual case, please ask our staff.

What does Cupping do?

Cupping therapy uses heat to form a vacuum inside the glass cup. After being heated, the cup is quickly placed on the body. The suction effect draws local fluids and cellular waste to the area, stimulating the body’s healing response and enhancing circulation.

The increased circulation has a similar effect to a tow truck clearing debris after a car accident. So it can be particularly effective for long term conditions such as stiff muscles.

The drawing up effect of the vacuum is what differentiates cupping from other manual techniques, and allows it to have a unique effect on fascia all over the body.

Cupping has the advantage of being relatively low risk as the skin is not punctured and there is no direct exposure to a heat source. However, it may leave marks.

Does Cupping hurt?

Cupping marks are trending amongst the world’s top athletes. Most people worry that they look painful, but they don’t feel like a bruise at all. The skin may be a little sensitive, but cupping is one of the gentler treatments with minimal to no tissue damage.

How long will the marks last?

The colour and fade time of the marks indicates the quality of tissue and circulation in the area. Traditionally darker marks indicate poorer circulation and blockage which take longer to resolve, this can occur over the site of old injuries. Light marks that resolve quickly indicate good tissue and circulation. Some say the colour of the marks is a result of drawing up stagnant non-circulating fluid and cellular waste.

What parts of the body can be cupped?

Large muscular areas of the body are usually targeted for cupping. Particularly at the site of injured muscles. Massage oil is often used to increase the comfort and to help form a tight seal. Some sites may not be able to be cupped effectively if there is hair or deep skin creases which break the vacuum seal.

Should I try it?

Cupping is very safe in the hands of an experienced practitioner and can have and immediate effect on the body. Next time your shoulders and back are getting tight ask for cupping and feel the difference for yourself.
